Orientation

The Casa sobre el Arroyo is located in Argentina, in the southern hemisphere. This means that the orientation that receives the most sunlight there is the North face of a building, the Eastern facade would receive sunlight during the morning, and and the Western, during the afternoon. The South face of a building would only receive indirect sunlight.

Orientation plan.

Applying this to the building of a house, the best distribution would be:

  • North face: Gets sunlight when the Sun is in its highest point. Great for the living room, dining room, and other stay rooms used during daytime. It is important to have sunshades for the summer.
  • South face: No direct sunlight. Appropriate for staircases or service rooms, like the kitchen or bathrooms.
  • East face: Best for bedrooms, as the solar incidence in the morning would help for a more natural awakening.
  • West face: Suitable for workshops, study rooms, or other places most used in the afternoon.

But Amancio Williams did a different use of light in this house.

In the other hand, the face with the most solar incidence of the building is the flat rooftop. The house's perimeter is surrounded but the trees that protect the facades with their shade, but the shadow does not cover the rooftop at all. This could lead to a problem with hot temperatures in the interior due to the heat of sunlight transmitted by the rooftop.
